Taking away our bus passes has caused many problems for people who are already struggling to survive on a prolonged low income which means we are unable to afford the use of public transport.
This action has cut off peoples chance for independence, e.g. in being able to pick up small amounts of shopping often on a daily basis as many can not carry heavy bags, infact people on low incomes have to shop around for the best deals available. With the bus passes we had a much better chance of socialising with others, e.g. drop - in`s, various disability groups, coffee mornings, over 50`s forums, volunteering, training etc. We were also able to meet up with friends and family, all these things are especially important as it is so easy to become isolated and depressed when you are no longer able to work and are suddenly cut off from your former colleagues and way of life.
It is also more difficult without our bus passes to attend doctors, dentists and hospital and physiotherapy appointments and pick up prescriptions, which many people with health problems need to do on a regular basis.
